Splashpad Opens in Barrington

The Freddie Herriman Pederson Splashpad was a project initiated by former Barrington Junior Women's Club (BJWC) President Erin Shechtman to honor the club's 80 years of service to the community.

In addition to wanting an impactful project to celebrate the BJWC anniversary, Erin was aware of the lack of summer recreational opportunities for children with mobility issues. Friend and BJWC member Rachel Sepe has a daughter Scarlett, who is confined to a wheelchair and unable to play in the pool and on playgrounds like other children in the summer. Together, Erin, Rachel, Scarlett, Mary Dale, and myself worked with the Barrington Park District to champion a place where Scarlett and children of all ages and mobility could enjoy the warm sunny days of summer together.

Many hands helped raise the funds to make the Freddie Herriman Pederson Splashpad a reality. Erin wrote grants to all the area organizations and together, with the help of community leader David Nelson, private donations were also secured. Freddie Herriman Pederson and her family came on board as the naming sponsor. Before the grand opening, Freddie's daughters and sister-in-law Mary Smith took part in a naming dedication of the new Splashpad.

Donors to the project include:

  • Barrington Junior Women’s Club $50,000

In addition, hand tiles were also sold for smaller donations. The hand tiles helped the Barrington Junior Women's Club surpass the $400,000 necessary to make the project a reality. The Barrington Park District absorbed the remaining costs necessary and will manage all the maintenance required.

Donors and their families were invited to a special Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, June 10th 2016. Children enthusiastically ran onto the splashpad once the ribbon cutting ceremony was finished.

All of us who participated in championing the project were overjoyed with the response of everyone in attendance, especially the children of all ages. Watching Scarlett Sepe soak her siblings and laugh with delight as she played with all the children under the sprays of water, validated the importance of the project.

The Barrington Park District agreed that the Freddie Herriman Pederson Splashpad would be open to the community at no charge in the mornings before the pool opens from 9:00a.m. to 12 noon, and from 5:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. in the evening.

The Freddie Herriman Pederson Splashpad was built by the community with a focus on all members of the community no matter their age, mobility or income.
