Barrington Junior Women’s Club Awards Annual Scholarships and Grants at Record Levels!

Each year, the Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC) hosts its scholarship winners to a recognition dinner in their honor.

Held on Tuesday, June 6th at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, the scholars were honored by their parents and BJWC members for the significant community service hours they have completed and to wish them well as they move onto their college careers.

BJWC is committed to recognizing service and these winners stand out among their peers.

“This is a wonderful evening recognizing the impressive contributions these students have made to Barrington and beyond,” commented Philanthropy Co-Chair Kelli Kermath

Students answered the question “What advice would you give your freshman self if you were starting high school again?”

The answers ranged from don’t worry so much to do your best to get your homework done while you can at school. BJWC members also loved hearing the inside story on how the video came about that resulted in the Brad Paisley surprise concert during graduation from Community Service Scholarship Winner Sean Dolan, who is active with BHS-TV.

The areas of service these students focused on are varied but the common thread is their incredible commitment to help others. In total, BJWC awarded $24,000 in scholarships to seven students. There were six community service scholarships at $3,000 and one BJWC Janice Clarke Presidential award of $6,000. This is a service-based award as well but places an added emphasis on leadership.

The Scholarship process is run by BJWC’s Philanthropy Committee, which also is responsible for the review of its grant applications. This year, it decided to do something new and on Thursday, May 18th, BJWC leaders welcomed almost thirty local organizations to a reception in their honor. Held at the Barrington Area Library, the morning event served to recognize, celebrate and award local non- profits with their 2017 BJWC Grants. BJWC membership was thrilled to distribute a record-breaking number of grants after concluding another successful year of fundraising efforts.

Thirty local organizations received monies totaling $105,065.

The gathering provided an opportunity for leaders from local non-profits to meet others committed to service and to learn more about important current projects. After coffee and refreshments, agency leaders briefly described their missions and the projects to which BJWC grants were directed.

BJWC President Mary Dale remarked, “This is a tremendous opportunity for us to better understand the important work that is being done with the funds raised by BJWC and its supporters. I love the connections being made today and the possibilities that these grants provide to so many.“

BJWC awards grants to local 501c3 organizations whose programs align with BJWC’s mission: To improve the lives of women, children and seniors in the Barrington area community.

The BJWC Grant process opens at the end of January and closes at the end of March. Members of the BJWC Philanthropy committee review and vet applications. Recipients are notified at the end of April.

This year there were new recipients including:

  • The Parker Playhouse
  • Harper College Educational Foundation
  • Friends of the Fox River Grove Library
  • Mane in Heaven
  • Mindful Waste
  • Barrington 220 Educational Foundation
  • Roy Wilmering Scout Cabin

Other organizations which BJWC has historically funded in the past and continued with this grant cycle include:

  • BYFS
  • Journeycare
  • Samaritan Counseling Center
  • WINGS and many others.

In addition to serving the community through grants and scholarships, BJWC also provides direct volunteer and financial support to groups in Barrington such as BACOA’s Meals with Wheels program, Sunny Hill School, and Barrington Giving Day.

BJWC also operates Safety Town, hosts special events for area seniors throughout the year and participates in various all community events through outreach programming.

Every so often, BJWC focuses on a legacy gift to the community as well. For its 80th Anniversary last year, BJWC worked in partnership with the Barrington Park District to raise funds to build a Splash Pad at Lagendorf. BJWC is thrilled that the Freddie Herrimen Pederson Splashpad will open on June 10th.

BJWC raises funds primarily through its two signature events, the Fall Fashion Show, held in November and the Spring Evening Event, which has been a casino theme for the past two years. BJWC is grateful for the many donors, community sponsors, members and guests who have so generously contributed to support our philanthropic efforts over the year.

The Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC) is a 501c3 organization that was established in 1936 to improve the lives of women, children, and senior citizens in the Barrington area community through philanthropy.
